A weekly cleaning routine that sticks

One small zone a day instead of a whole Saturday lost to cleaning.

Time: 20 to 30 minutes a day 5 min read

Most cleaning routines fail because they try to do everything at once. Splitting the house into zones, one per day, keeps each session short and the whole home clean by the end of the week.

A sample week

  • Monday: kitchen surfaces, appliance fronts and the sink
  • Tuesday: bathrooms: toilets, sinks, mirrors and shower
  • Wednesday: dust living areas and bedrooms, top to bottom
  • Thursday: floors: vacuum and mop the main rooms
  • Friday: laundry, sheets and towels
  • Saturday: one bigger job from the monthly list
  • Sunday: rest, plus a 10-minute reset for the week ahead

Make it stick

  1. Keep a supply caddy for each floor so you never hunt for products.
  2. Set a timer; stop when it rings.
  3. Clean top to bottom, dry to wet: dust before you vacuum, vacuum before you mop.
  4. Share zones with everyone in the house.
