How to deep clean a toilet

Under the rim, the base and the hard water ring.

Time: 15 minutes 3 min read

A quick weekly clean keeps toilets fresh; a monthly deep clean gets the spots most routines miss.

Steps

  1. Put on gloves. Flush, then apply toilet bowl cleaner under the rim and let it sit as the label says.
  2. Spray the outside, seat, hinges and base with a disinfectant cleaner.
  3. Scrub the bowl, getting up under the rim.
  4. Wipe the outside from top to bottom, ending at the base and the floor around it.
  5. For a hard water ring, use a pumice stone made for toilets on a wet bowl, gently.
