Laundry basics: labels, sorting and settings
Read care labels, sort smart and choose the right temperature.
Most laundry problems, like shrinking, fading and dingy whites, come from the wrong temperature or overloading the machine.
Sorting
- Whites, lights and darks
- Heavy items (towels, jeans) separate from delicates
- Lint givers (towels) away from lint takers (fleece, dark knits)
Temperature
- Cold: most everyday clothes, darks and anything that might bleed or shrink; saves energy
- Warm: moderately dirty clothes and synthetics
- Hot: towels, sheets and heavily soiled whites, if the label allows
Better results
- Don't overload; clothes need room to move
- Measure detergent; too much leaves residue
- Turn darks and printed items inside out
- Treat stains before washing, and check before drying; heat sets stains
