Floor care by type
Hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile and carpet: what to use and what to avoid.
The wrong cleaner can dull or damage a floor. Start with the manufacturer's instructions, then follow these general rules.
Hardwood
- Sweep or vacuum with a soft brush head
- Damp-mop only (wring it nearly dry) with a cleaner made for finished wood
- Avoid steam mops, soaking wet mops and oil soaps on polyurethane finishes
Laminate and luxury vinyl
- Dry mop or vacuum often; grit scratches
- Use a lightly damp mop and a cleaner made for the floor type
- Avoid standing water at seams
Tile and stone
- Ceramic and porcelain handle most pH-neutral cleaners
- Natural stone needs stone-safe cleaners; avoid vinegar and citrus
- Clean grout lines occasionally with a brush
Carpet
- Vacuum high-traffic areas twice a week
- Blot spills right away
- Deep clean once or twice a year, following the carpet maker's guidance
