How to clean the refrigerator
Shelves, drawers, seals and coils, plus food safety while it's empty.
Do this before a big grocery shop, when the fridge is emptiest. Keep perishables in a cooler while you work.
Steps
- Take everything out and throw away expired food.
- Remove shelves and drawers; let glass shelves warm up before washing so they don't crack.
- Wash shelves and drawers in warm, soapy water; rinse and dry.
- Wipe the inside with a mild mix of water and baking soda, or warm soapy water.
- Clean the door seals with a soft brush and soapy water.
- Put everything back, wiping jars and bottles as you go.
Once or twice a year
Unplug the fridge and vacuum the condenser coils (underneath or at the back). Clean coils help it run efficiently.
Temperature check
The USDA recommends keeping the refrigerator at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F. An inexpensive fridge thermometer tells you for sure.
